A new creative generation is emerging from the devastation of lockdown. Inside Issue 66 of 10 Magazine, we teamed up with Chanel to spotlight a series of actors, musicians, activists, writers and artists who are fueled by talent, self-belief and are ready to shape the cultural landscape. Their time is now.
First up is emerging singer/songwriter Griff. With a voice that’s both powerful and pretty, she is set to dominate across all platforms. Resistance is futile.
Where is your happy place?
“My happy place is anywhere I can make things, so here in my home studio, making songs or sewing things. I’ve got a big family – I’ve got two older brothers, mum and dad, and we also foster. The house is always mayhem. So I just lock myself in here and get in my own head and space. It’s where I feel most myself. Every pretence that you have when you’re interacting with the world, as soon as I’m in here, it all drops off.”
Why do you need a happy place?
“I need it for my own sanity. I need to come in here and get all my thoughts out and create what I need to create. I would always come in here after school. I hated it, got off the bus, walked back home and then came in here. I’d just feel a little bit better. For a moment I didn’t have to think about school and work and could just make things.”
Last year was tough. How are you coping in 2021?
“I think being emotionally resilient doesn’t mean you have to be fine all the time, so during this year, just let the bad days come and let the good days come and know it’s gonna get better.”
