Between New York Fashion Week, Grammys and BAFTAs, some pretty fabulous lewks were seen yesterday night. And despite being known mostly for its outrageous outings (see: Lady Gaga arriving in an egg), last night’s Grammy Awards saw a surge in haute couture outings. More so than ever before – the craftsmanship of Parisian ateliers got the attention from the world of music. And to celebrate this trans-Atlantic migration, we’re bringing you ten couture looks from Grammys 2019 that had us audibly gasping while clutching on our imaginary pearls.
The image that’s now circled the world is definitely Cardi B dressed as Botticelli’s Venus in vintage Mugler, an archival piece from the Autumn 1995 Haute Couture collection. All hail the pearl queen Cardi! Also on the couture circuit, Kylie Jenner and Katy Perry were pretty in baby pink thanks to Olivier Rousteing and his first ever haute collection for Balmain. In the Armani corner, Alicia Keys and Camila Cabillo both wore custom Privé in bold colours. Simplicity represented. Joining in with the neutrals was the big winner of the night (Album of the Year, hell yeah!), country princess Kacey Musgraves in Pierpaolo Piccioli’s Valentino. Paying homage to the country genre was Jennifer Lopez. Dressed in highly embellished Ralph & Russo couture, she was part Dolly, part Joanne, and full-on JLo glam. Going in for high impact was Janelle Monae in fresh-off-the-catwalk Jean Paul Gaultier sculptural mini dress joined by a crafty safety pin headpiece. St. Vincent is one of those people that turns even the girliest of looks into something major – and she’s not stopping now. Her Giambattista Valli SS19 couture garment had some fantasy qualities about it, but instead of Alice in Wonderland, she was looking more like a Marvel villainess. And then we’re back at Cardi B who didn’t stop her fashion showcase on the carpet. Back inside the Staples Centre, Miss Cardi served two more vintage Mugler looks – with the black feather & rhinestone performance attire being our absolute favourite. Also taken from the French designer’s 20th anniversary show for Autumn 1995, it was fierce in every sense of the word. And that kids, is how you do couture.
