FROM THE VAULT (SUMMER 2011)
Graeme Fidler & Michael Herz – The Creative Directors, Bally
We like to think of these two as the fashion equivalent of DIY SOS. You got a house in need of reinvention? Who you gonna call? Graeme and Michael, obviously? Just look at their track records? Should they ever want to quit the fashion rat race, the BBC will be waiting with open arms. Until then, some pinging ’tween pinning.
SCHOOL. DID YOU GO? WHERE?
MH: “I studied first at Westminster College of Art for my BA and then at the Royal College of Art for my masters degree.”
GF: “I studied BA Fashion Design at Northumbria University in Newcastle.”
WHAT’S INSPIRING NOW?
“People, places, words and images; life in general with all its weird and wonderful.”
DO YOU EVER FEEL THAT NASTY TWANG OF JEALOUSY NO ONE WILL ADMIT TO WHEN LOOKING ROUND AT YOUR PEERS?
“Not jealous but inspired by and amazed sometimes at their talent and innovation.”
HAVE YOU ALWAYS WANTED TO DESIGN? PICTURE THE SCENE: YOU’RE ABOUT, PLAYING WITH A FIRE ENGINE. DIDN’T YOU DREAM OF SLIDING DOWN THE POLE MORE THAN CUTTING CLOTH?
MH: “I really wanted to be a history teacher. That was after wanting to be a cowboy and a train driver… I was always drawing pretty ladies and princesses when I was young, but I never related that to being a designer at such an early age, I just knew I wanted to be creative.”
GF: “I was always interested in art and architecture, especially bridges; but it was only when I left school and began to buy a lot of vintage clothes, wearing them with contemporary items, that I knew I would like to somehow create them.”
WHAT’S FASHION? FASHIONABLE EVEN?
“Breaking the rules.”
DIVINE INSPIRATION COMES FROM…? ABOVE?
“People, places, words and images; life in general with all its weird and wonderful.”
