Clare Waight Keller is having a good week at Givenchy. After a lot of uncertainty in the industry, she showed a phenomenal couture collection, revved it up in AW18 and then… designed Meghan Markle’s Royal Wedding dress. You simply can’t beat that. Waight Keller is in her stride, momentum is picking up. She’s found her signature at Givenchy, this Pre-Spring 2018 collection is obviously, noticeably her, yet not a tribute to Hubert de Givenchy (yet) who passed away in March. We think she’s saving that for Spring/ Summer 2019. Till then, let’s discuss Pre-Spring. Nothing like a recent trip to Japan to spark a creative flow, even better when the founder of the house also had a love affair with the country. Yes, good things always come from those who have found themselves under the influence of Japan and this is no different. Fiery reds are splattered through the collection to create traditional Japanese motifs, dresses cleverly cut to fold and glide like origami. Clare’s go to classic boot at Givenchy is in its element, slouchy as ever, those triangular killer heels worked onto pointed pumps. The Givenchy women are on a mission, quilted backpacks secured, almost oversized zip up jumpers and drawstring pullovers. A nice alternative to the hotter than hell pink chevron pleated dress and softly tiered lace. This girl has got grace and swag. The boys are tailored ever so smartly, Clare’s magic touch, on Japanese specialist wool coats and vividly good printed shirts. Pants are easier, on the move, still firmly fitted but paired with a fly knit style sneaker, a flash of fluro propelling him forward. Clare’s brilliant faux fur is still in action, hyped up in the mix of sequins and crystal embellishments. Day and night, but actually doable. Riding that new era Givenchy wave.
