It seems the rumour mill was pointing us in the right direction all along! Ever since Clare Waight Keller completed her role as artistic director of Givenchy back in April, the URL fashion community was adamant 1017 Alyx 9sm founder Matthew Williams would become her successor. Just moments ago, via a voice note posted on Givenchy’s Instagram, Williams joined the house as its new creative director. “It’s been my life long dream to be in this position, and it’s really surreal that it’s finally here,” said Williams. “I’ve worked every day for 15 years towards this single goal and it’s super surreal.” Since founding Alyx back in 2015, Williams has been a key player in the streetwear-luxe crossover in recent years, working closely with Kim Jones for his 2019 Dior debut, designing that buckle that appeared throughout the brand’s SS19 collection.
Williams is still a young designer and was a finalist in the LVMH prize back in 2016. His creative vision aligns more with former Givenchy creative director Riccardo Tisci than it does of his predecessor Keller. Yet Williams’ vision for the brand is set to be nothing Givenchy has seen before. “In these unprecedented times for the world, I want to send a message of hope, together with my community and colleagues, and intend to contribute toward positive change,” Williams said in a statement. A massive congratulations with Matthew from Team 10!
