Ahead of his show on Sunday in Milan, Mr Armani relayed to the audience that the show would be held in silence with a statement: “My decision not to use music in the show was made as a sign of respect towards the people involved in the unfolding tragedy in Ukraine.” Only the clicks of the cameras and the footsteps of the models could be made out as the show took place in the intimate basement of his Milan HQ, where he also lives; the signatures so synonymous with his eponymous brand gently drifting down the runway in elongated suedes, velvets and liquid-like silk and outerwear arriving in comforting matalasse quilting and enveloping faux-fur. Armani was the only designer to use their fashion week show to make a public statement of solidarity with the Ukrainian people, making himself heard the loudest with his silent protest.
