GCDS: Ready-To-Wear SS22

If you ever find yourself stranded on a mysterious island, don’t panic, Giuliano Calza has got you. GCDS’ SS22 Island Appropriate collection, was presented through an 11-minute short film that Calza personally wrote and directed. The movie is set somewhere offshore and the ambience seems to mirror the world of today, where, following a catastrophic shipwreck, we are all keen to escape reality.

The patterns and silhouettes feature Giuliano Calza’s latest fixation, an imaginary underwater fashion fairytale world. Here, the atmosphere is sexy and eclectic, and asymmetrical cuts, blinking embellishments, and sheer sparkling material are commonplace. Bedazzled total looks and beaded trousers made of rewashed dead-stock denim are a must-have and extreme platform pumps are mandatory. And, on a more realistic note, the diaphanous textures and asymmetrical shapes that some of the pieces present could become the go-to for your post lockdown wildest night-outs.

For his latest collection, Giuliano Calza collaborated with One Piece, the Japanese animated series produced by Toei Animation in 1999. Calza is known to have a weak spot for anime, and for Island Appropriate he took inspiration from One Piece’s under-the-sea drawings, with graphic motifs appearing in some of the looks and giving an additional twist to the already articulate collection.

“Living life is all about growth and getting through the tough parts, so, this collection and this film are a representation of that. Of hitting a point of liberty and ecstasy,” said Giuliano Calza, and honestly, we think that he beautifully hit that point.
