Photographer Fumiko Imano definitely knows the ropes when it comes to working with Loewe, quickly becoming a go-to creative in Jonathan Anderson’s universe. So when the Spanish brand started work on its latest book – Publication #32 – working with the artist was an obvious choice. Inside the limited edition clothbound volume, Imano tells a story by assuming various roles of photographer, model and even her own twin. She skillfully cuts and pastes herself into images to magic up her own doppelgänger sat by her side.
Yet it’s actress and star of Cannes award-winning film On a Magical Night, Chiara Mastroianni, who is the book’s main focus. The vintage hued images of Mastroianni assert the epitome of Parisian simplicity, as the star poses with a classic Porsche which is parked just outside the UNESCO World Heritage Centre. Concrete pillars juxtapose the lavish details of Anderson’s key outerwear selection, pulled from Loewe’s AW20 collection. The opulence of gilded buttons, pleated shoulders and couture dresses made up of organza silk and crepe satin take the spotlight. Mastroianni captures the effortless sophistication of the Loewe customer, whilst perched up against the vintage motor. The leather trench coat pictured with the brand’s iconic Balloon bag will leave you yearning for minus temperatures and an evening stroll along the River Seine.
The publication was art directed and designed by M/M (Paris) and styled by Anderson’s on-going creative partner Benjamin Bruno – who’s fine eye for detail is perfect for Anderson’s vision for Loewe. The images hold graceful poise as they work to tell a story but could also stand alone as a cracking piece of art. There is a finite figure of hand-numbered copies – 1,200, to be exact – which will be an unmissable addition to the fanciest of coffee tables.
