FRIEZE 2013: THE HIGHLIGHTS

If you haven’t noticed, and how could you not because, let’s face it, you can’t eat dinner anywhere, Frieze is on in London this week. Obviously we haven’t been because, we are uncultured, but in a failed attempt at bettering ourselves we have compiled a top ten, shamelessly pillaged from The Telegraph and The Guardian respectively. Obviously each entry is accompanied by a sparkling, witty and very knowledgeable comment on it’s meaning. Our art analysis is so like deep.

Untitled (Endless war/ You will live forever) by Barbara Kruger at Spruth Magers.

Weirdly this reminds me of those tampon ads, when you dip them in beakers full of blue liquid, because blue really looks like blood no?

image

Dunno by Urs Fischer at Sadie Coles.

This reminds me of a giant floating colon. Notice the fried egg on the floor. This obviously a commentary on food consumption and the digestive tract.

Groovy Spiral by Dan Graham at the Lisson Gallery

The title has the word groovy in it. Wouldn’t it be amazing if Lady Miss Kier performed Groove is in the Heart in it? She should buy this, reform Deee-lite and take it on a world tour. A farewell tour that never ends. Like Cher did. Cher would also look good dancing in this.

Woman with shopping by Ron Mueck at Hauser & Wirth.

Everyday realness. I can relate.

image

You/You by Doug Aitken at 303 Gallery

As Amanda Lear once sang “and U are everything to me”.

Cat on a clothes line by Jeff Koons at the Gagosian.

Because Sophie likes cats and this one looks a bit like her cat Harry. Though she would probably claim that her’s is more handsome but is he worth as much as this cat Sophie? Is he? I don’t think so.

image

Repaired broken mirrors by Kaida Atta at Galerie Krinzinger Vienna.

I’m looking at the man in the mirror and he has unexpectedly morphed into Scarface. Notice Marina Abramovich reflected in it too. Notice how she manages to avoid the scars.

image

Safety Cones (after Richard Serra) 23 sculptures by Rob Pruitt at Gavin Brown Enterprise

The friendly and sometimes mardy traffic cone. Notice how none of them are wearing Richard Serra’s face.

image

Four in a dress by James Lee Byars at Michael Warner

People not included. Apparently selling humans is illegal or something.

image

Shed a na gig by Sarah Lucas at Sadie Coles

Don’t you ever have one of those where you want to crawl into a toilet bowl and hide. No? Well I do. I can totally relate.

Frieze London is on at Regent’s Park till Sunday.
