Stone Island and New Balance are back at it again, and this time, they’re making history. The duo’s latest drop? A re-engineered take on the legendary 998 – the first Made in USA shoe from their long-running partnership, initially introduced in 1993.
As expected, innovation is the name of the game. The design pulls straight from Stone Island’s archives, reimagining Raso Gommato, the military-inspired satin-weave fabric first introduced by founder Massimo Osti in spring/summer 1984. The trainer’s upper is crafted from a new polyurethane-coated cotton canvas, a contemporary spin on the classic textile that gives it an ultra-futuristic, almost industrial edge.
The colourway? Signature Stone Island. Think deep plum, mauve and copper maroon inspired by the brand’s SS25 offering and punctuated by reflective silver accents that demand attention. But this isn’t just about looks. The Abzorb midsole returns to deliver next-level comfort, while a translucent outsole – stamped with “Stone Island Product Research” – cements this kick’s status as a techwear masterpiece.
Dropping March 27, this one’s for the collectors; available in select Stone Island stores and online via MyStoneIsland accounts (if you were quick enough to sign up). Miss out? You’ll be watching these skyrocket on resale.
