Miu MiuAfter a bumpy beginning, the Roaring Twenties 2.0 have firmly arrived. And with it, comes its glam poster girl – the flapper. No, we’re not referring to your aunt, who gets her knickers in a twist at the smallest inconvenience – we’re talking about the flapper girl, a symbol of sexual hedonism.
But who is the flapper girl of the 21st century? Well, she may be reading The Great Gatsby but she won’t be relating to its characters. Swapping love triangles for a self-care routine that she’s nailed down to a T and a strong yet sensual wardrobe. She won’t say no to happy hour at the cocktail bar, but will come back home from being up all hours to a pint of water and make-up remover waiting on her bedside table.
For 2022’s Flappercore trend, it’s all about liberated lust through an array of retro re-imaginings for a bygone era. Blumarine migrated pearls from the neck to the body with dresses draped in pearl-ruches, for a silhouette that sways along with fringes reinvented in leather by Matthieu Blazy for his Bottega Veneta debut.
Sequins did not go amiss either, coming in both epic and microscopic proportions at Valentino and No.21. Prada and Simone Rocha transformed Mary Janes from dowdy to disco with angular edges set for transporting you through the shenanigans of a night on the town. And if you still grimace at the thought of putting heels on again, then Miu Miu’s ballet flats will be a more sensible choice for dancing the night away.
Eyes came smudged – à la walk-of-shame – on the runways at Peter Do and Saint Laurent, framed by thin and angular brows at Sacai. Hair was slicked and shiny at Fendi and Chanel; revolutionising the iconic flapper ‘do. Faux furs engulfed figures at Dior with fluffed up accessories at Versace and Fendi to keep goosebumps at bay on the trek from the bar to the Uber.
Optional accessories for the flapper include a dandy suit on her arm – man not required, with bulky yet snatched tailoring for all. Ralph Lauren reigned with sleek pinstripes suits and dresses chaperoned by fedoras. Louis Vuitton dove head first into oversized, relaxed proportions for the more laid-back don. Flappercore may be born out of the pandemic and not the prohibition, but it’s still more fabulous than ever.
