Etro: Menswear SS20

The skill and artful craft of Etro is legendary. It’s a patchouli-soaked world of exceptional fabrications and decades of beautiful clothes in the finest luxury fabrics. And travel. Etro has long been the go-to for global nomads and luxury travellers. It’s the first stop for fine-gauge knits for chilly evenings and silk shirts for day; easy leather sandals and handmade luggage and bags.

The spring collection of swingy ponchos and suits in paisley prints were teamed with bright scarves with fancy tassels – so far so luxury Etro. On the floor of the runway venue (the show was set in a former garage) patterns of coloured paint, were a hint, perhaps, at the joyous scenes from the Hindu Holi festival of India, where the faithful throw coloured powders at each other and into the air. As the models walked through the powder paints they coloured the air and the hems of their trousers. The Holi festival became a part of the fabled trail to India, the hippies took in the ‘60s, and the clothes they wore formed a backdrop to the collection. Patchwork waistcoats and striped hemp shirts and paisley patterns everywhere.

Injecting a modern (retro) twist was Etro’s new collaboration with the Star Wars franchise. A crisp light blue cotton shirt with the 1977 original film’s famous logo, came printed on left of the chest – a retail winner. See, too, the hoody and a baseball jacket, the back emblazoned with the original poster imagery. The worlds of global and intergalactic travel coming together in shops next spring.
