The latest couture accessory according to Elie Saab? A small child. A small child dressed in couture, naturally. Haute mini-me. That’s what the models carried down the catwalk (well, held hands with) – perfectly formed models in miniature. Where do we procure one of them (legally)? Anyway, the collection. It was an ode to New York, as evidenced by the cut out skylines that sat amongst the attendees. The notes called it an “hymn to old New York”, which meant glamour times ten. There was barely an inch of fabric that didn’t have some sort of embellishment, appliqué and general sparkling something . It was what we will call “fantasy feminine” – dresses that cinched at the waist in rich plum, beige and cobalt (to echo an NY sky, apparently), touches of lace, sprinklings of marabou feathers. This was a man at the peak of his powers – a spectacular testament to the art and intricacies of couture. It closed with the bride, who walked to applause, posing the question: who needs such a thing as a bouquet when you have thousands of flowers hand embroidered on to your dress? Elie Saab is a crowd pleaser, and we were left feeling just that.
