Dover Street Market Los Angeles Is Open For Business

Under the hot Californian sun, a long queue appears in the landscape of industrial buildings. Is this just a mirage? No, it’s Dover Street Market Los Angeles opening its door to public. The sixth location of arguably the most groundbreaking retail space in the world, DSMLA is bringing the “beautiful chaos” imagined by Rei Kawakubo to the West Coast. And lord knows the super-polished Hollywood smiles need some of that other-worldly darkness. “I want to create a kind of market where various creators from various fields gather together and encounter each other in an ongoing atmosphere of beautiful chaos; the mixing up and coming together of different kindred souls who all share a strong personal vision,” Kawakubo says of the concept behind her retail baby, reconfirming her position as the high empress of fashion.

But how does that translate into Cali lingo? Spreading across 15,000 square feet of a single-level space, DSMLA consists of two adjoined warehouse-looking concrete buildings accessible by only two doorways. The interior was, as per uzh, designed by Kawakubo herself, along with all the Comme Des Garçons brand spaces within the store. In true DSM-style, there’s no windows looking in – two event spaces serve as the showcase of all that’s going on inside. Bringing the most delicious pastries even LA-ers won’t be able to say no to, Rose Bakery has both an indoor and outdoor space which will be restocked daily with all the best of products offered locally. As for the brands available to shop, it’s yet again the classic DSM shebang embellished with some pretty awesome novelties. You can get yourself some new-season Gucci, Sacai, Raf Simons, Off-White and Simone Rocha, but also peek into the dedicated Chanel Fine Jewellery space or lurk around the Pat McGrath Labs x The MET installation. Sadly, DSM does not offer bed space and you CANNOT move inside. Sorry.
