What makes the rose so romantic? Is is because it (kind of) looks like a nipple? Perhaps it’s because, historically speaking, the flower was seen as similar to a woman’s blushing cheek. Or maybe it’s that, in the words of Domenico Dolce, “In history and in nature, the nobility of the rose is unsurpassed.” Personally, I like the nipple theory, though I do think Sig. Dolce has a point. Dolce & Gabbana’s Velvet Rose fragrance (part of the Velvet Collection) is a homage to the rose – the Mediterranean variety. The scent smells, well, rosy. And roses smell nice. Not, as OutKast sang, “like poo-oo-ooo”. So maybe that’s why they’re romantic. We’re promised that the fragrance “wraps the wearer in the warmth of the balmy Mediterranean sun”. And who could decline an offer like that?
