Could it be that Messieurs Dolce and Gabbana are planning a takeover of the fashion world? It’d certainly seem that way. At the rate they’re going – what is it, book number three this year already? – they’ll soon be sending beautifully designed tomes stuffed with pics of men you’d cut your left pinkie off to be down the runway rather than clothes. This new one, though, is rather special. For this is dedicated entirely to that Adonis-like male who goes by the human name of David Gandy. Notice how his initials are the same as those of D&G. It’s like the hand of fate has bought them together. Which also explains the title, Nomen Omen – “the fate in the name”. Notice, too, when you flick through, how handsome he looks in Domenico’s and Stefano’s designs. He’s nice, too, très polite. Even answered some questions for us.
So you’ve got a new book that’s all about you. How does that feel? A little strange to know that people all over the world, our office, are going to be fawning all over you? After all, 11 million did visit YouTube just to watch you in Dolce & Gabbana’s Light Blue ad dressed only in white Speedos.
“Yes, it is an astonishing honour to have a book, especially with my name on the cover. However, I see it more as a book with a wonderful collection of all the collaborations between myself and Dolce & Gabbana over the past five or six years. It was their vision that started all this and I’ve been lucky enough to be part of the whole process.”
How did the idea for the book come about?
“Domenico Dolce approached me about the idea and of course I was flattered. We then set out the process of slowly getting everything together for the book, from campaigns, to press, editorials, catalogue, calendar and of course shooting new material with Mariano Vivanco.”
Any favourite images or shoots? Going thorough all those pictures must have triggered some memories?
“I always seem to live my life planning the future, so it [was] quite emotional going through all the work from over the many, many years. There are so many good memories, from favourite campaigns, to the wonderful Light Blue shoot, to editorials that took hours to shoot and perfect. I do also adore the new pictures, though, from Mariano Vivanco.”
Any urge to re-create your Richard and Judy moments? As a kind of limited-edition insert, maybe?
“Funny you should say that… I will be on This Morning the week after the book launch.”
So, what are you planning for the next book?
“Next app will be on fitness/training and nutrition. The next book? That’s a good question…”
