When it comes to capturing an iconic fashion photograph, few carry an ability akin to that of Peter Lindbergh. Two months since his passing, the fashion industry still mourns one of the industry’s greatest storytellers. Lindbergh was the undisputed king of shooting the OG supermodels, and his superstar portraits captured pop culture’s biggest names in a deeply intimate light. Lindbergh had a chorus of great pairings throughout his career, including a particularly special relationship with the House of Dior. Through Lindbergh’s lens, Dior’s Parisian elegance flourished timelessly on new terrains and nowhere is this more evident than in Dior/Lindbergh, the two-volume photobook published by Taschen.
Consisting of over 100 images, the project would be Lindbergh’s final collaboration with the Maison, a project near and dear to his heart. The first volume – New York – is the product of a massive project documenting “seventy years worth of Dior history, projected into the jungle of Times Square.” The house shipped over 80 looks pulled from the extensive Dior archive to the Big Apple, where Lindbergh shot each look in the mayhem of inner-city New York. Calling on a gaggle of “Lindbergh beauties”, the late photographer lensed the likes of Karen Elson, Amber Valetta and Alek Wek, wearing designs created by Monsieur Christian Dior himself, through to those of the current helm of the house, Maria Grazia Chiuri, with each photograph drenched in Lindbergh’s signature black-and-white, atmospheric style.
Titled Archive, the second volume is a greatest hits of the photographer’s relationship with the House. The images that fill the volume are pulled from the pages of US Vogue, Vanity Fair and Harper’s Bazaar, placed next to never-before-seen shots of menswear, womenswear, and haute couture classics. Dior/Lindbergh is a double-whammy of cracking photography that captures both the brilliance of Lindbergh and the timelessness of Dior – a must-have addition to your coffee table.
‘Dior/Lindbergh’ is available online and in select stores.
