Consider this the spirit of Diane von Furstenberg channeled through the mind of Jonathan Saunders. Not that we mean to suggest that Diane has gone anywhere, heaven forbid – she was here this evening for the brand’s AW17 presentation looking, as per, utterly fabulous. But she’s passed over the reigns to Mr Saunders, who was here too, having become Chief Creative Officer of the American brand last year. So the collection. Let’s call this a sort of modern eclecticism. All those Diane tropes were there – the Seventies reference points, the glorious colours, vivid prints but here refreshed through Jonathan’s knack for highlighting the female form. Eyes firmly on those fur stoles and jackets in candy tones, worn here over handkerchief-hemmed dresses and longer, asymmetric gowns, or shimmering sequinned ballet tops. And talking of ballet (not that we cheated here, we read the notes afterwards) this was, apparently, about dance. Clothes to move in. Because what else is a fabulous lady to sashay about the floor in than something positively weighted down with sequins and a poof of fur? Couple of champagnes later and we might have just been tempted to try them out.
