Speaking to The New York Times last year, Armstrong described his accent as, “mid-Atlantic gay get out of the suburbs as fast as you can”. The unspoken language of his early works, as collected in his new book Night & Day, says something similar. There’s a sense of the young outsider to them, reminiscent of Gregg Araki’s homage to adolescence, Totally Fucked Up. Which is what we’d be, if we were as young and gorgeous as Armstrong’s subjects, and didn’t have two whole magazines to fill. The images speak of a beautifully misspent youth. Out now.
