The Creatures of the Wind boys, Shane Gabier and Christopher Peters, are really very lovely. A fact we can attest to, having grabbed them for a quick post show gab to discuss their equally very lovely AW17 collection. Here’s what Chris said: “it was really about finding a place… finding a place in weird and troubled times.” Because as the notes concurred, their latest offering was all about belonging, about “one’s place in a kindred community.” It began with the boys thinking about communal living and the ties that lifestyle forms, explaining why they chose to show the collection not only on a diverse group of models but also on their closest friends – from filmmakers to performance artists. They like seeing their collection of different ages and shapes, they say. And the collection itself echoed this idea of intertwined identity, having a kind of eclectic, borrowed feel – deconstructed vintage fur coats, chiffon delicately embellished with Swarovski crystals, softly clashing patterns. And layers of texture – washed silks, wools, cashmere, waxed leather. Clothes that you want to reach out and touch, to stroke. And, talking of strokeable textures, we were obviously fixated by those knee-high latex socks and bags, which the boys first got the idea for when looking at a store which made uniforms and shoes for nurses. Word is though, the socks were a little difficult to slide on. In the words of one onlooker: “he literally had lube all over his knees.” Our kind of Saturday, then. Bravo boys. We loved it.
