Christopher Kane: Cruise 2016

“The starting point was our Lovers Lace and it was a natural progression to the love heart as the icon and motif of this collection. The love heart seems so simple and pure, almost child-like, but powerful and graphic. Looking at the heart through history, researching its roots in Quaker embroidery, led to looking at the scientific side of the heart and the idea of ‘suturing’. So there are those two sides to this collection: something romantic and pure, almost ‘church girl’ with those pastels, mixed with a powerful ‘killer red’ and an idea of something seductive but also disturbing.” And yes that its a lot of press release, but it’s good press release, certainly better than anything we’d write. Anyway, for some reason, the idea of hearts, of ‘scientific’ hearts, sutures and Quakers, is making me think of Frankenstein. Not that Dr Frankenstein, nor his creation were Quakers, at least not that I know of, but I always imagine Quakers as living in woods, removed from the world. Personally I’ve always thought of Frankenstein as the ultimate twisted love story. Creation borne of love, creation and love gone wrong. Not that this is wrong. This is right. Very right.
