Who would have thought the Chopova Lowena girls were into golf? Their collection, entitled Too Ripe and Ready by Half, after the regency era slang they’ve become obsessed with, fused fruity Regency silhouettes with vintage golf style and accessories, all layered on top of their signature salty ‘n’ sweet folkloric maximalism.
It looked terrific. Every piece – shown on mannequins styled by V&A curators for regency accuracy – exuded energy. The pair honoured the kitschy traditions of vintage golf styles. Panniered, corseted gowns, lavished with beads and bows, were made from upcycled golf bags and leftover fabrics from previous collections. There were rainbow Fair Isle knits collaged with clashing stripes and worn with mini kilts and plaid skirts or plus fours and underwear pieces from the brand’s new intimates range, Chopova Lowena Feelings. “You are witty and pretty” announced one piece.
The famous carabiner skirts came in intense patchworks of texture and pattern, styled with Peter Pan collar shirts and lashings of accessories – carpet bags heaving with charms, pearl and cameo necklaces and butterfly bedazzlements. Chopova Lowena creates a total world. It’s immersive, beautifully resized and oh so true to itself.
