Chanel Rome show for the Métiers d’art collection finally happened after a day of soaking up the cities antiquities, exquisite architecture and art. We finally got to see what coloured, influenced and inspired Karl’s vision for this collection – Paris in Rome. The stage was set at the legendary studio’s of Cinecitta and our expectations of what was to come were of course influenced by this legendary sound studio, where film classics like La Dolce Vita and Roman Holiday were made. So as Karl’s collection for Chanel ascended from the brilliantly set designed Art Deco Metro station he truly merged the Parisian with the Roman. Italian and French Cafe society merged to create this new Chanel vision. She was sexier, more dangerous, with much more lingerie inspired lace pieces. Tight leather and patent skirts clung to the body creating these more glamorous silhouettes. These girls really felt like cinematic heroines from the late 50s/early 60s predominantly monochrome and much grittier than the normally polished girl we come to expect from the house. This girl had much more attitude and a rock and roll spirit at the heart of her. Backcombed beehives secured and adorned with oversized satin bows and dark black eyeliner defining the eye which left you in no doubt that this girl was not to be messed with – she meant business! I absolutely loved it! As these girls walked the circuit of the Paris /Rome street that Karl had created with their pearl heeled mules clapping against her lace clad heels it almost enforced this sense of abandon and rebellion. Truly brilliant. There was of course still some feminine moments and one of my favourite was of Lily-Rose Depp in this fragile little peach cocktail dress but she still was always unmistakably oozing attitude and sass. Another glittering triumph for Karl Lagerfeld and the house of Chanel.
