Chalayan: Ready-to-Wear SS19

Cultural tendencies took over the world of the Chalayan woman for SS19. She is a world traveller with years of experiences, and wherever she goes – there’s an element of her experience she takes back home. But when we say years of experience, we mean thousands of years. The inspiration for Hussein Chalayan was The Abduction of the Sabine Women, an incident of mass abduction dating back to Roman mythology that played a big part in Renaissance art. In his show notes, Chalayan even compares this disaster to the world of today, and so he takes it on himself to create a wardrobe for women today, to fight against all the nastiness that surrounds them.

Voluminous jackets with straps preventing them from escaping the body, precise slashes in tailoring with licks of fabrics swaying in the air, Annie Lennox blasting from the speakers… Female power was in the air, getting the models ready for whatever danger is ahead. Their armour is tailored to perfection, created out of the finest textiles and even has a set of spikes around the ankle. And if we were to trust anyone to dress us for battle, it would definitely be Hussein Chalayan.
