As the founder of legendary British label Burberry, Thomas Burberry was both innovative and brilliant. After making the revolutionary discovery of the tightly-woven and water-resistant gabardine fabric 1879, Burberry quickly became a household name. Shortly after, the growing label was approached by the British War Office to design a new military coat, and thus, Burberry’s gabardine trench coat was born – becaming a staple in UK fashion and beyond.
Only a week after the launch of its Burberry Open Spaces film – which highlighs the journey one can take through the freedom of imagination – Burberry has unveiled its latest campaign which pays homage to its original founder and his legendary coat invention.
Inspired by the label’s history with the outdoors, chief creative officer Riccardo Tisci continues to break Burberry’s barriers and explores the label’s affinity with nature and exploring within every collection that he leads. Since his welcome to Burberry in 2017, Tisci has reinvented the label’s outerwear. From cutting away the back of the coat during his SS22 presentation to reveal models’ bums, to experimental peepholes and cut-off sleeves that beautifully accentuated the body during his latest menswear show, Riccardo Tisci has ushered in a new dawn for outdoor dressing.
Burberry’s latest campaign unlocks a notion of freedom and exploration set in the English countryside. Irina Shayk, Miles Gardner, Nic Minwoo and Niclas Baker stand tall on plinths in the centre of British wheat fields as abstract dancers move behind them with beautiful rhythm and flow. The campaign marks the debut of Burberry’s new lightweight gabardine fabric, crafted into quilts and puffer jackets. Each garment is tailored to its specific needs, including different levels of warmth, protection and weight, adjusted for freedom in the outdoors.
In addition to its menswear line, Burberry’s latest offering includes its signature trench coat updated using tumbled tropical gabardine, making for a soft and fluid piece. A gem of the campaign, Burberry’s new black nylon puffer coat is presented with a relaxed fit hooded design and is lined with check wool-cashmere.
For women, the collection presents the classic black and honey trench coat complimented by Burberry’s signature check pattern. Adding to its range of quilted styles, the models don diamond-quilted gabardine gilets, woven puffer coats and premium corduroy-collared jackets.
