Following the death of Her Majesty The Queen, Burberry has announced it will no longer show during London Fashion Week.
In a statement released this morning, the brand wrote: “As a mark of respect, we have taken the decision to cancel our Spring/Summer 2023 runway show due to take place on 17 September in London. We hope to see you in the near future.”
This afternoon, Raf Simons also released a statement confirming the brand will also be cancelling its show scheduled for Friday September 16. It reads: “As the country enters a period of official mourning, we will pause during this time of great sadness. We will take this time to respect the legacy of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II and her 70 years on the throne. Our thoughts are with the Royal Family and the people of the Commonwealth.”
The British Fashion Council has announced all core business activities at London Fashion Fashion, which takes place September 15-20, can continue, though parties and openings will be cancelled.
If The Queen’s funeral takes place 10 days following her passing, the BFC has advised that shows taking place that day should reschedule. This will affect the likes of Christopher Kane, Chopova Lowena and Roksanda.
“We are deeply saddened by the devastating news of the death of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II who has dedicated her life to serving her country, this her platinum jubilee year recognises 70 years on the throne,” wrote the BFC in a statement yesterday. “London Fashion Week is a business-to-business event and an important moment for designers to show their collections at a specific moment in the fashion calendar, we recognise the work that goes into this moment. Therefore, shows and presentations of collections can continue but we are asking that designers respect the mood of the nation and the period of national mourning by considering the timing of their image release. We will also communicate this to the media asking for them to also respect this.”
More updates to follow.
