Veronique Nichanian is exiting Hermès.
The artistic director of the Hermès men’s universe has announced she is leaving the house after 37 years at the helm. She was the longest standing creative director working at a major fashion house until her departure this evening.
Joining the maison in 1988, Nichanian has carved out the Hermès menswear identity to be one of the most desirable in the world of luxury. Throughout her three-decade tenure, her collections have focused on felt modern and sophisticated, though with a youthful tint, creating desirable collections each season that have remained idyllic and easy-going all while being made from the finest materials to hand.
Her final collection, unveiled during the Paris shows this past June, was based around creating a wardrobe fit for dressing in the city during balmy summer months. Highlights included open-weave leather trousers, loose shirting with exaggerated lapels and supersized holdalls that echoed the silhouette of a giant Birkin.
As fashion careers go, Nichanian’s has been one that is deeply triumphant. Her successor is yet to be announced.
