Blumarine was a megabrand in the 1990s, famed for its sassy, supermodel-stacked runway shows and equally sassy clothes. Teeny-weeny slip dresses, corset tops, satin jeans and fur-trimmed pastel cardis were part of the ’90s hot girl, Blumarine code. Its founder Anna Molinari retired at the end of 2019 and the brand is now beginning a new era with a new designer, Milan’s handsome rising star: Nicola Brognano.
His SS21 debut show cleverly paid tribute to Blumarine’s iconic boudoir chic. He revived the famous Blumarine fur-trimmed cardigan, worn by every ’90s It Girl from Naomi and Drew to Winona. Brognano showed candy coloured cropped versions over corset tops and embellished silk slip dresses. Zebra and leopard print, boot-cut, hip huggers also played into the 1990s vibe, as did midriff-baring scarf tops and minuscule tiered chiffon mini skirts. In a post-pandemic, post-tailoring world, that cardi could be the making of Blumarine all over again. Brognano’s boudoir separates feel right. They offer a much-needed jolt of pastel-coloured escapist glamour but they’re also fun and easy.
