How does Birkenstock, creator of the supreme simple chic sandal, stage a show in Florence? Hire out Europe’s largest private garden. Obviously. Into the Giardini Torrigiani garden, as part of Pitti Uomo, Birkenstock had a picnic. A fashion picnic. With Michel Gaubert on the decks, Suzy Menkes, Michelle Lamy, Cathy Horyn and Sterling Ruby amongst others wined and dined as Birkenstock’s Spring/ Summer 2019 new styles were showcased. The models sauntered around the fountain in a whole lot of loose, neutral cotton to show off the shoes, the stars of the show. They came in the label’s classic shapes, some reworked and some very futuristic. If they were to wear sandals on Mars, Birkenstock would be the exclusive sponsor. Socks with sandals were also a thing, comfort is key here. Straps were glowing in soft, gold metallics, velcro-d on and buckled up and around the ankle. Endless options. Of course there were also skinny sneakers as we are crowning them – as opposed to the chunky ugly sneaker situation – and clogs in charcoal coloured suedes. It was a whole 47 look show of every possible ultimate summer shoe of our dreams, ending with the OG’s in the most popping pink. Our SS19 Birkenstocks will most definitely lead us to bigger and better things. Shoes glorious shoes.
