You might never have thought of a blanket coat before, but take one look at Bethany Williams’ new capsule collaboration with Selfridges, and you won’t be able to get the idea out of your head. Williams sourced vintage blankets from all over the UK and transformed them into these distinctive coats and jackets. She scoured antique markets and car boot sales for the blankets, which tell a story of local traditions in weaving or knitting. Each one is different and each one is a talking point.
The idea came from her work with The Magpie Project, a charity that helps women and children in temporary accommodation. Inspired by them, Williams explored the idea of comforting textiles, which led her to the blankets. “A blanket is so much more than a piece of fabric, it is a feeling of comfort and shelter and I wanted that feeling to be at the heart of this capsule collection,” she said.
The designer made a few prototypes in her last collection but the Selfridges capsule allowed her to fully explore the idea. And how Williams’ cutting skills are impressive. Granny’s old throw is expertly upcycled into vibrant tailoring for urban dandies. Williams’ attention to detail is impressive. Even the buttons are handmade, by London Green Wood, from wood grown or found in Hackney. With 20% of the profits go to The Magpie Project, these coats are a prize worth winning.
