Ten Loves: Balmain Unicorn Sneaker

So long dad trainers, we’re all for a futuristic silhouette, and Balmain’s latest design certainly floats our boat. Well, it is literally inspired by aerodynamic, mid-century speed boats. Christened the Unicorn, the shoe is a part of the house’s latest pre-fall collection that continues to instil the renewed French style of creative director Oliver Rousteing.

It was certainly no mean feat to design, either. Taking eight separate moulds to complete the multi-sectional sole, the foot is perfectly cradled via three translucent bands, strung like high-tech bungee cords around the shoe. Other characteristics include varying traction patterns and a series of sleek colourways to boot. The result is an incredibly tactile embodiment of Balmain’s strength and innovative spirit. But this is nothing out of the ordinary for Rousteing, as a designer who has spent the last decade revolutionising our understanding of luxe design through his distinct rebellion and democratisation.

Still wondering how the Balmain sneaker earned its title? Just as the Unicorn signifies strength and beauty, it also finds itself symbolising heritage through its position on the French coat of arms. Rousteing and his team felt it only natural that such a rare and elusive creature give its name to Balmain’s latest triumph.
