Sperm is one of those words that you’d never expect to use in the context of writing a show review, but there’s always a first… Adwoa Aboah opened the Ashley Williams show, emerging onto the catwalk wearing an oversized black fleece printed with smiling white sperms swimming in repeat across the width. Another appeared on a pink and blue tie-dye t-shirt, worn by Lily Nova, printed under the word ‘pilgrimage’. And a white satin strapless a-line dress was populated by an interlinking black mass of the cartoonishly-rendered ejaculate. The best iteration came printed on a fleecy cuddly fox stole scarf, worn with a black sleeveless party dress, wrapped around the models neck. It’s encompassing of the droll, deadpan humour that Williams does best.
Eclectic mismatched granny chic ran riot, totally indicative of that enviable laid back anything goes attitude Williams herself exudes. Fabulously fluffy jumpers and cardis came in brightly coloured harlequins or were knitted with cats. Skirts were knee-length pencil cut or a fun hybrids of a kilt and a scort. Party dresses popped in pink satin, shiny silver, wild animal prints and two showstopper dresses with beaded embroidered bodices and full marabou feather skirts flounder down for the finale. The shoes and bags were the first outing of Williams’ collaboration with Jimmy Choo, you could practically see the waiting list forming. AW19 was a spunky collection to say the least. Pun most definitely intended.
