10 Questions with VTSS, As She Releases Her New EP ‘Projections’

Jaw-trembling BPMs and thundering basslines have come to define VTSS’ sound. The Polish DJ and producer is known for her experimental weavings of club-ready tracks from colliding directions. A true thrill-seeker, she sharpened her craft on the dancefloors of Berlin, before moving to East London last September for a new chapter in her career.

Cutting her teeth as a hard-hitting techno DJ, these days VTSS – real name Martyna Maja – is returning to the eclectic genre combinations of her earliest sets. This fresh direction can be seen in her own productions, too. Her latest EP Projections, released on Ninja Tune imprint Technicolour, is peppered with mind-boggling twists and turns, never sure to stick with singular sound for too long. “With clubs being closed and there being no perspective on when it was going to change,” says VTSS, “I felt free for the first time to do what I wanna do. And being in London, being surrounded by friends who are outside of the ‘techno bubble’ — everyone here is more genre-fluid. That was really inspiring.”

As she gears up for her For Your Entertainment tour across the UK, kicking off this Friday in Glasgow, we grab VTSS for a quick natter.

1. Describe your new EP, Projections, in 10 words or less.

“Lockdown diaries: hating from outside of the club.”

2. Best club to play in London?

“Fold for techno but haven’t played there in a while.”

3. Perfect curer for a hangover?

“Jambon beurre sandwich + green juice + ginger shot from Pret.”

4. If you could curate a club night in London this Saturday, where would it be and who would you have playing?

“I’d do it in Colour Factory, have Crystalmess, Chippy Nonstop, DJ Spit, Coucou Chloe, AceMo, Blawan.”

5. Which track from the EP is best for an afters?

“For your Safety!” Or if you’re slightly pretentious then “The Need To Avoid.”

6. What’s one new year’s resolution you’ve had trouble sticking to?

“Spending less money on food delivery. That hasn’t been a problem before London but the restaurants & delivery services are just too banging around here.”

7. What’s one country you’re excited to play this year?

“I’m excited about my mini UK tour in February. Don’t wanna get my hopes up for anything later than this, one month at a time.”

8. Who’s a DJ we should be going to see when they play in London?

“OK Williams.”

9. What hair colour are you planning on going next?

“The shade!!! Haha, I’m thinking about sticking to blond for a moment, channeling my momma, but omw to get a fringe as I’m writing this.”

10. What can we expect from VTSS in 2022?

“Working harder, getting hotter, being even more annoying.”
