Wow. We knew Beyoncé was good. But Black is King? We can only bow down to the queen. The feature-length film, now streaming on Disney+ (sign up for a trial, you won’t regret it) is a reimagining of The Lion King as a true celebration of the black diaspora. Beyoncé based Black is King’s plot on the music that appeared in last year’s The Lion King: The Gift – which Beyoncé both starred in and curated the soundtrack. Featuring the likes of Kendrick Lamar, hubby Jay-Z and her eldest daughter Blue Ivy Carter, Beyoncé adapted each track to direct a narrative that follows a young black boy on his road to self-discovery. Working with executive costume designer Zerina Akers and stylist Ib Kamara on the project, the wardrobe for Black is King features both big-name brands such as Burberry and Valentino, as well dazzling group of black designers. From structural jackets courtesy of Loza Maléombho based in Côte d’Ivoire, to laced body-con dresses from Déviant La Vie in Los Angeles, Akers rigorously searched all four corners of the globe to gather some of the finest fashion talent out there. Whilst we rewatch the film for what seems to be the millionth time, here’s 10 of our favourite looks.
