In just over a month, we have seen anti-racism protests take place across all four corners of the globe. The senseless murders of George Floyd, Breonna Taylor, Elijah Mcclain, amongst countless other black bodies in the hands of police brutality, has seemingly woken the world up to the systematic racism that still exists today. A common misconception surrounding the Black Lives Matter movement is that we need only to be fighting for racial equality in the US. People are often guilty of excusing the UK as not being a racist nation, yet Britain is in no way innocent. Black people here in the UK are 40 times more likely to be stopped and searched by a police officer than a white person. In 2018, it was also found black people had the highest unemployment rate of any ethnicity, and that ethnic minorities earned 21.7 per cent less than the rest of the population.
Following The Earth Issue’s print fundraiser in support of the Black Lives Matter movement, which raised a whopping £213,200.00, a new Anti-Racism Photography Fundraiser has been set up. Over 100 renowned photographers worldwide have donated prints to the fundraiser – including 10 Magazine contributors Derek Ridgers, Mario Sorrenti, Roxy Lee and Clare Shilland, as well as critically acclaimed names like Wolfgang Tillmans, Hannah Moon, Corrine Day, Martin Parr, Vivek Vadoliya, Daniel Obasi and Renell Medrano.
Running for three weeks straight, each print costs £100, with all proceeds after printing and shipping costs being donated to three critical British organisations: The Black Curriculum, Black Minds Matter, and Exist Loudly.
