Visiting Japan has been a permanent fixture at the top of our bucket lists since watching Joanna Lumley’s documentary a couple of years back. Side note: if you haven’t seen it, watch it. One of the places that the guide books (and Joanna) all agreed is a must visit is Kyoto, a city of 1.5 million people located on the central Honshu Island and a cultural hotbed. From the tea ceremonies hosted by Geisha’s in the Gion District, the downtown Nishiki Market to the thousands of Buddhist and Shinto shrines, there’s a lot to see. And after Gucci’s party on Friday we couldn’t be more convinced to make a trip.
It feels like we’ve just recovered from Gucci’s party with A$AP Rocky at Sole DXB in December and the AW19 show in February, but Gucci headed east to their Kyoto Takashimaya Store in Japan to celebrate the launch of the Gucci Zumi, the Italian house’s latest completely covetable It bag. Named after the inimitable and totally cool LA-based actress, musician, jewellery designer and Alessandro Michele’s muse: Zumi Rosow. Going under the Instagram monkier @fangusz666 she’s easily recognisable with her punky style, Cleopatra-esque eyeliner, choppy triangular fringe and saxophone skills. An updated version of a bag, which Michele discovered in the deepest depths of the Gucci archives made its first appearance in the SS19 show carried down the catwalk by Rosow and has since been spotted in the hands of some of our FROW faves.
The night kicked off with Alaska Lynch reading his poetry dedicated to Rosow at the event and Japanese actress Mari Natsuki (known as Tamazusa in Legend of Eight Samurai, the voice of Yubaba and Zeniba in Spirited Away and Auntie in Isle of Dogs) recited the poetry translated into Japanese. Making full use of the 67-year dancing ban being lifted, the store guests headed from the store to the after party hosted at Club Metro to dance. Following in the footsteps of Aphex Twin, Dj Harvey, The XX and Jeff Mills, Rosow took to the decks whilst Byanboy, Tina Leung, AMIAYA and Mademoiselle Yulia took to the floor. What more incentive do you need to start saving for that trip… or the Gucci Zumi. In the meantime, have a look through the party photos below.
