Now we realise that there are those in our fashion industry with the power to make or break, like a butterfly on a wheel, a designers career. But does that mean that everything that’s shown on a catwalk must pander to the tastes of these two beacons of power. Must you really put out in the manner of Julia Roberts in Pretty Woman, pre getting into Richard Gere’s car to succeed? To quote En Vogue, ‘why oh why must it be this way?’. What has happened to self worth? Confidence? Why must we and the ‘beacons’ be subjected to cookie cutter fashion? The ‘beacons’ did not get to the top of the proverbial tree by following the rules. They broke them all. They took risks. There’s a reason they now rule from gilded thrones and it had nothing to do with playing it safe. After all, it’s only clothes. How wrong can you go? As long as you remember that a jumper equals two arms not three, a trouser two legs not four, there’s only so much you can bugger up. So really, loosen up, go crazy. Sew something other than a body con dress. Whats the worse that can happen? Editors that actually manage to stay wake throughout the entire duration of your show? Quelle horror!
