A big happy birthday goes out to Loewe as it marks 180 cycles around the sun!
Starting its celebrations off strong, the luxury Spanish leather house is kick-starting the party with a bang. Or rather, a bag. A damn good one too. Designed by co-creative directors Jack McCollough and Lazaro Hernandez and debuting on their SS26 catwalk, the Amazona Bag is reborn as the Amazona 180, taking on a simultaneously timeless yet refreshingly contemporary interpretation. With the very name signalling the 180-year anniversary of Loewe, the design duo pay homage to an essential verse in Loewe’s leather bible – a piece that has been around for the past five decades.
But first, a brief history lesson: the Amazona has all but humble origins. Initially inaugurated in 1975 during a societal shift in Spain, the Amazona oversaw daily routines of women newly acquainted with the workplace. The bag rejected impractical shapes and swapped them out for softer architecture – with agility and adaptability – to support the busy life of the working woman. Amazona’s first iteration envisioned a gold suede moment with brown leather piping and Spanish artist Vicente Vela’s anagram – now recognised globally by detail-oriented fashion fans.
Keeping its original form but shedding its skin, the Amazona 180 is anchored by a toron top handle and includes three options – short handle, removable shoulder strap and crossbody – adapting to wherever the day takes you. It is specifically designed to be carried slouched and open, serving the world with a lowkey “what’s in my bag” moment, in real time. If that’s too revealing for you though, a discreet magnetic closure keeps the main compartment secured, so you can store your more personal items.
Available in either soft calfskin or suede and in black, dark chestnut, royal azur, ink navy, daisy yellow, lava grey and white colourways (along with the OG suede gold/chocolate combo, for the traditionalists out there), there’s loads to choose from.
