Step Inside Kiko Kostadinov’s First London Flagship

The universe of Kiko Kostadinov continues to grow. This past week, the label welcomed its loyal fanbase into its first London store, located in Haggerston, East London. It’s the latest brick and mortar built by the cult brand in a global expansion that has also included physical stores in Los Angeles and Tokyo, as well as a showroom and office in Paris, all of which opened last year.

On home turf, the new London flagship marks new beginnings for Kiko Kostadinov, which celebrates its 10th anniversary this year. The entirety of the building where the store is located will serve as the brand’s new HQ, with studio and office spaces being situated on upper levels.

It was here the brand last Friday debuted Dante, a new co-ed collection available to cop on the shop floor instantly alongside its latest collaboration with Levi’s.

It’s the first time the brand has shown menswear and womenswear (the latter designed by Laura and Deanna Fanning) on the same catwalk. Dante borrows its name from Kostadinov and Deanna’s Lakeland terrier – the two designers are married and recently welcomed their first child together.

In the collection’s notes, the brand describes Dante as “part mascot, part muse, part furry CEO”, with his furry mug appearing as patches stitched to frocks and jackets, as well as pin badges that showered plaid skirts and dress ties. In a winder context, it was the presence of Dante in the studio that brought the Kostadinov team “an imaginative portal to Britishness” in creating the collection, which funnels styles associated with British country living through a quintessentially Kiko lens. On the catwalk, rugby shirts walked alongside cashmere overcoats, corduroy blousons and lightweight parkas ideal for trudging through sludgy fields with your own beloved four-legged friend.

The store itself, like Kostadinov’s clothes, adopts a retro-futuristic look. Designed by THISS studio, the brand worked alongside American artist Ryan Trecartin to help define the store’s interiors. Trecartin, who also teamed-up on Kiko Kostadinov’s Tokyo and LA locations, adapted a 2016 sculptural-video simulation work he collaborated on called Stunt Tank, to create the London store’s centre piece. Architectural metal beams and sculptural cream sofas sit amongst maroon-coloured walls and carpets in one of the city’s most intriguing store concepts in recent memory. It makes for an ideal weekend outing for London’s fash pack.

Kiko Kostadinov’s London store is open Thursday-Sunday at Adelaide Wharf, 21 Whiston Road, E2 8EX.
