Asics: Keep On Moving

Are we still wearing trainers in 2025? If the brand in question is ASICS, then yes. Over the past few years, we’ve collectively ditched our heels and fallen in love with its athletic silhouette. The Japanese brand loved all over the world has now crafted the Sportstyle edit, cleverly positioned at the intersection of performance and lifestyle. The collection seamlessly blends technical innovation with cultural resonance. And the new offering celebrates a philosophy where movement has become a way of life.

For Spring Summer 25, the brand draws inspiration from Radio Taiso, a Japanese morning exercise routine that anyone can follow. Broadcast every morning at 6:30am on the Japanese public station NHK Radio, it has captured the heart of the nation and has endured across generations. First introduced in the1920s, it remains a communal ritual, emphasising the transformative power of simple, collective exercise. It’s an uncomplicated programme that encourages people of all ages to connect with their bodies, which fits seamlessly with ASICS’ mission of supporting active lifestyles. “We see Radio Taiso as a perfect example of accessible, simple movement that aligns with our philosophy of uplifting the mind through movement,” says Anissa Jaffery, communications and collaborations lead at ASICS Sportstyle Europe. “It’s a universal practice that encourages people of all ages to connect with their bodies, which fits seamlessly with our mission of supporting active lifestyles.”

The following pages reflect Radio Taiso’s energetic spirit by bringing together a dynamic collective of ten Berlin-based creative minds: DJs, dancers, movement directors and artists, each using movement as a construct for storytelling. Together, they form a community that transcends disciplines, proving that movement is not just a personal act but a shared language. At the heart of ASICS Sportstyle is the mantra “Anima Sana in Corpore Sano” (“A Sound Mind in a Sound Body”). Founded in 1949 by Kihachiro Onitsuka, this principle remains a driving force in the Japanese brand’s evolution. Onitsuka believed that through physical activity, one could achieve a harmonious balance between mind and body. “Our core design philosophy at ASICS Sportstyle is rooted in our founder’s belief that movement is key to both mental and physical well-being,” explains Jaffery. Every pair of trainers is designed with this in mind, tested at the brand’s Kobe-based Institute of Sport Science (ISS), where biomechanics and foot anatomy research refine each silhouette.

In a fast-paced world where burnout and digital fatigue are increasingly prevalent, the ASICS Sportstyle collection champions the idea that movement, in any form, is a powerful antidote. The brand’s philosophy is dedicated to championing our burgeoning awareness that the best way to incorporate exercise in our daily life is to not solely focus simply on performance, but instead foster emotional resilience and strength, in addition to cognitive clarity. Simply put, it’s about making ourselves feel good. Today, we know that movement is more than just exercise – it is a means of self-expression and a way to connect with ourselves and others.

Around the world, cultural traditions have long embraced movement as a way to nurture well-being. From Tai Chi in China to capoeira in Brazil, movement carries meaning beyond fitness; it is tied to heritage, ritual and healing. ASICS Sportstyle taps into this universal drive, recognising that the way we move should be accessible, inclusive and adaptable to each individual’s lifestyle and ability. The brand wants to champion this ethos, celebrating the diversity of movement across creative and cultural backgrounds. Quintessential Japanese design principles of precision, minimalism and continuous refinement are seamlessly woven into ASICS Sportstyle’s DNA. The philosophy of kaizen, or continuous improvement, informs the brand’s design decision, ensuring that heritage models evolve while maintaining their essence. The resurgence of the GEL-KAYANO series and the refinement of the GT line reflect this approach: a commitment to innovation without compromising authenticity.

Today, performance footwear has transcended sport, becoming embedded in the cultural fabric of contemporary style. ASICS Sportstyle has navigated this shift, merging technical excellence with an aesthetic sensibility both functional and relevant. The brand’s message is clear: movement isn’t about competition, it’s about connection. The interplay between music, body and rhythm underscores the broader narrative of well-being that ASICS continues to champion. Well-being is about consistency, not perfection, and that movement – no matter how small – has profound benefits for the body and mind. Rather than chasing fashion’s shifting trends, ASICS Sportstyle cultivates longevity, both in its design and in its philosophy. By fostering a community of creatives who view movement as an essential element of self-expression, it continues to reaffirm that true style is not just seen, but felt.
