10 Questions with Coco & Clair Clair As They Drop Cheeky Third Album, ‘Girl’

Alternative pop duo Coco & Clair Clair, real names Taylor Nave and Claire Toothill, are back to charm their way into the top of your playlist with their newest album release, Girl. The Atlanta-based pair, beloved by manic pixie dream girls everywhere, have well established their sound of cheeky bars and airy beats for an irresistible third album to boot!

A tale as old as time, or as old as the digital age, the duo sparked a friendship on Twitter through a shared sense of humour in late-2013, and decided to pursue music professionally together after months of being at the top of each other’s ‘friends’ list. More than a decade later, the ladies are known for their mastered eclectic sound following years of experimenting with DIY rap on SoundCloud and dominating their local house party scene.. As no strangers to the usage of social media, their 2017 single Pretty, hit TikTok with a bang and garnered a casual 100 million streams. Which led to the creation of their sophomore album and a whirlwind summer of showcases, festivals, and tours across the US and Europe last year. It’s safe to say Coco & Clair Clair are seasoned vets.

Although we’d argue the best thing about these besties is their ability to make fame fun again!  From Venmo requesting Drake $50 and prank calling the Safdie Brothers (which lead to them being blocked), to sneakily calling Erykah Badu at a sleepover, this duo is a refreshing reminder not to pass up an opportunity to incite.

Having begun teasing their third album this July with the release of two singles, and featuring cover art from artist Tom Hancocks, the highly anticipated nine-track is expected to wow. We expect nothing less than tunes filled reverb beats packed with punchy, confident rap and irresistibly catchy hooks. They will be kicking off their North American tour, with R&B artist SadBoi, in New York this September.

To coincide with the release of Girl today, we sat down with Coco & Clair Clair to chat about everything from their dream venue, to their highly respected wardrobe advice and mutual love for Gwyneth Paltrow.

1. What can the girlies learn about you two upon listening to this new album? What was the inspiration behind it?

Coco: The inspiration behind it was we wanted to make a cover album but our team told us that was a dumb ass idea so then Girl was born. What the girlies can learn from this is as a wise man once said, ‘You can’t always get what you want, but if you try sometimes you just might find you get what you need.’ I think we all needed this album.

Clair Clair: Exactly. We sing about our lovers, our enemies, our insecurities, and our confidences… so I think listeners can learn a lot about us from these songs.

2. What is your favourite lyric from the album?

Coco:I’m a bad bitch I’ll kill the both of us.’ To me, there is so much depth here. I remember a long time ago, probably in 2016, we wanted to make a song that said something like ‘I’ll kill us both, I don’t care’ but it never did find a home for some reason. It reminds me of Cameron Diaz in Vanilla Sky when she tried to kill herself and Tom Cruise’s tiny ass. Sometimes bad bitches have to sacrifice themselves for the greater good.

Clair Clair:Cus the block got my dick hot n alladat. On a couple block lists, yeah, alladat. They ask if I’m phased I say ‘no, sorry lad.’ Got only girlies with taste at the kickback. Heard some geezers that never heard of Weezer, talkin’ ‘bout a pint in the pub in Ibiza. Sometimes I can’t tell work from leisure. I just need a dirty martini, maybe a litre.’ Incredible. Some of these lines are from a freestyle that Coco did before we began working on the album. I’m so happy we got to use them because I think they encapsulate us perfectly.

3. What has been your biggest ‘I’m just a girl’ moment to date?

Coco: I had to have a random lady come into my dressing room when I was thrifting to come kill a spider. I also had to give my number out once in exchange for killing a spider for me in my car at a gas station. I’ve also jumped off a balcony onto a couch in the living room to avoid a spider on my stairs. There are more moments like this but I’m currently in an immersive therapy program so I don’t like to focus too much on the past.

Clair Clair: I have this moment quite often and it’s when I go out to dinner at a fancy restaurant and order butter noodles.

4. What is one artist you would love to work with?

Coco: Gwyneth Paltrow.

Clair Clair: Gwyneth all the way.

5. What song perfectly describes your personalities?

Coco: Boom Boom Pow by Black Eyed Peas.

Clair Clair: Imma Be by Black Eyed Peas.

6. Would you rather be overdressed or underdressed forever?

Coco: Underdressed.

Clair Clair: I would rather be overdressed but I’m almost always underdressed and wearing PJs or flip-flops. So…

7. Which artist has had the biggest impact on your artistry?

Coco: The Millionaires.

Clair Clair: Grimes.

8. What is your favourite thing to do together other than make music?

Coco: Karaoke, shopping, traveling, building forts, making drinks, sleepovers, road trips, bar hopping, going to the strip club, you name it babes.

Clair Clair: Couldn’t have said it better <3.

9. Dream stage to perform on?

Coco: Madison Square Garden.

Clair Clair: House party vibes: a castle in England with a huge pool that has a see-through dance floor over it as the stage. We’re surrounded by massive fountains and beautiful plants, fireworks are going off, all of our friends are there, and free vodka gimlets and the best mini cheeseburgers of all time are being passed out. We all get to sleep in the castle after the performance is over.

10. Mini skirt and kitten heels combo or maxi skirt and chunky belt combo?
