JW Anderson’s ‘Carrie’ Collection Is Creepy As Hell

It’s officially Spooky Season; and what better way to delve into spine tingling horror than with JW Anderson’s new AW22 Carrie capsule collection. For women, the retro garbs – first unveiled through a series of bold images lensed by Juergen Teller with actress Hari Nef at the fore – were printed as billboards and mounted on vans to litter the streets of Milan during Fashion Week back in February.

The bloodcurdling capsule features both poppy ready-to-wear pieces and supernatural accessories, counting effervescent puffer jackets, T-shirts, tracksuits and printed co-ords to tackle the horrors of high school. The looks are punchy – this time worn by Lily McMenamy – teeming with enticing retro pop art elements and plastered with chilling depictions reworked from inceptive film posters or creepy quotes ripped straight from the screenplay, bringing the devil-may-care of the 1970s back to life.

The original, 1976 film directed by Brian De Palma, sees Carrie White take revenge on her bullies at her cis, all-American, suburban high-school prom using catastrophic psychic powers. Carrie, an abused, outcast teenager played by Sissy Spacek who – after her cohorts dump a gallon of pig’s blood over her head dying her alabaster gown a coagulated crimson, just as she accepts her prom queen award – seeks her gruesome, telekinetic revenge.

Stephen King has been a fan favourite in the fashion world for decades, seeping into campaigns and referenced on the catwalk, and with Halloween on the horizon there’s no better a time to make high fashion frightful. Take it from Anderson, who in the show notes says, “If you’ve got a taste for terror…Take Carrie to the prom.”
