Haider Ackermann’s schedule is about to be chockablock. The acclaimed designer will be the fourth name to take the reins of Jean Paul Gaultier’s couture atelier with a one-off collection, set to be unveiled during Paris Couture Week this coming January.
Ackermann – who will also debut a collaborative collection with Fila in Manchester in November – follows in the footsteps of Balmain’s Olivier Rousteing, Glenn Martens of Diesel and Y/Project, and Sacai’s Chitose Abe, who’ve each guest-designed a couture collection for the brand following Gaultier’s retirement in 2020.
Famed for his tailoring and ingenious comprehension of colour, Ackermann’s most recent collection for his eponymous label was AW20. He was creative director of Berluti between 2016-2018 and currently serves as a creative consultant for Maison Ullens. Most recently, one of Ackermann’s designs went viral when Timothée Chalamet – a regular wearer of the designer – wore a shiny-red backless top and matching trousers to the premiere of Luca Guadagnino’s Bones & All at the Venice Film Festival.
“To approach haute couture has always been my dream, and now being the guest of the Jean Paul Gaultier haute couture house is an immense honor that I fully embrace,” the designer told WWD.
