Thom Browne gave Cinderella a fashion rewrite as only he can. Showing at the Opera Garnier (a location so lavish it has more gold leaf than a magic money tree), he cast Gwendoline Christie as his Prince Charming and Pose star, MJ Rodriguez, as Cinderella. Christie opened the show in a lavish opera cape embroidered with gold bullion. Browne followed that with a parade of twenty models rustling down the catwalk in grand silk taffeta opera coats, each with a number on the back like a curious cross between couture and varsity chic.
Then Browne’s famous tailoring came out in intricately crafted patchworks of wool in soft sugary shades – it was like opening a box of macarons. After that, things went punk, with low slung trousers, mini kilts and visible thongs, worn under ballooning ball gowns. It was fantastical, feel good and carnivalesque. At the end, MJ Rodriguez treating us to a proper runway sashay, before exiting the catwalk in a pink gauze Cadillac. Paris is burning? This was a ball to remember.
