Stripes, checks and argyle: these were the patterns that functioned as the beating heart of Kenneth Ize’s autumn/winter 2022 offering in Paris this weekend. Equally conventional and eccentric, they worked their way into maxi skirts (with pockets!), bold blazers and a keyhole cutout mini shift dress – all of which were crafted from the intricate Nigerian asoke fabrics which have become Ize’s signatures.
This season, new iterations of the African textile took on trousers spliced with denim, classy co-ord suiting and a front-zip jacket cropped at the midriff but carried to completion by a royal blue knit. Fringed hems elevated the intrinsically simplistic garms to the kind of looks you’d want to sport on a night on the dancefloor – paired nicely with classic tan corduroys and holy knits with crimson trimmings serving nineties-inspired silhouettes.
A crochet cardigan overlaid with a Cobalt blue chenille jumper came paired with straight-leg jeans that offered a touch of graphic intrigue, where a sketchy white eye was plastered across the groin. Keeping it pictorial, Ize added continental African motifs and butterfly patches throughout.
Ize also refreshed his colour palette this season, opting for shades that are somehow even more vibrant than in the past. Sharp chartreuse, teal, grass green, lilac, white and austere blue brought a whole new energy to the scene – tailored with a mosaic touch.
