Prada: Menswear SS22

Are you dreaming of getting away? Do you long to cast off that city suit and dash into the cool, refreshing waters of a perfect blue, Sardinian sea? Miuccia Prada and Raf Simons channeled that desire with their SS22 men’s movie.

The film showed models walking through a red “tunnel to joy”, which acted as a portal, transporting them to the seaside. By the looks of their outfits, the Prada boys couldn’t wait to transition from city to beach. Underneath their roomy, tailored jackets, they wore patterned swimming skorts – a curious cross between shorts and a skirt – or cute little rompers printed with sailor tattoos, with the legs rolled right up to there. Eagle-eyed Pradaphiles will have spotted the trunks, featuring a green basket weave archive print that first appeared on the Prada runway in SS96 collection womenswear show.  Pay attention to leg day because short shorts are a thing. Atop their heads, were bucket hats with an integrated coin pouch on the back and sleek shades, slotted into the brim.

“A sense of the utopian, the ideal, of hope, positivity. To expose yourself to nature, to go to the beach — it’s freedom. It is utopian. That is really a primary need — an intellectual need, too,” said Mrs Prada of the mood. As their models emerged onto the beach – on an area of coastline where Prada is funding a reforestation of marine ecosystems – they were so eager to splash in the surf that they didn’t bother to kick-off their black leather city-brogues first. Boys will be boys.

“The primary feeling is one of joy. It’s almost like that memory of a child, the joy of a child going to the beach. The simplest and most honest of pleasures. In all its simpleness, it’s also something very meaningful and timeless,” commented Simons afterward. Alongside the city-meets-beach looks, were floral hoodies, lace neck sailor knits, and a fabulous array of precision-cut coats. The minimal high shine trenches, car coats and roomy leather biker jackets had plenty of sleek appeal, but don’t forget to take them off before you go for a swim.
