Optimism and pragmatism reigned supreme at Kenzo, where the talented Felipe Oliveira Baptista created a look that addressed Covid realities in soaring style. Inspired by bees, “the regulators of the planet,” and their fundamental relationship with mankind, Baptista based his look on the beekeeper’s protective uniform. Wide hats with veils that extended all the way down, enclosing the wearer, were the recurring motif of this co-ed show. They were worn with Stretchy vest dresses and cut out leggings or multi-pocket jackets and utility trousers.
The models walked through a formal, walled garden in Paris, as the audience sheltered under umbrellas. The designer layered sheer fabrics for men and women and put a new spin on Kenzo’s famous prints. “The world is crying,” he said and modified the house’s archival poppy and hortensia prints with a weeping flower design. This designer is making a name for himself with modern clothes that you can move in, shelter beneath and express yourself with. He called his approach, a version of punk. It feels right for 2020 and beyond.
