Following Burberry’s massive SS21 showcase last week which took place in the middle of a forest dotted somewhere in England, the themes of nature and the great outdoors in the brand’s AW20 campaign come at no surprise. After spending most of 2020 indoors, with a second lockdown looming, Burberry is here to virtually whisk us away to the luscious outdoors with a campaign of epic proportions.
“This campaign is all about memories and reflections,” Riccardo Tisci explains, “The collection was inspired by escape and freedom. Recently I have reflected upon my memories and of being at one with nature again, a dream-like journey of another time, another place.” The campaign draws upon Thomas Burberry’s spirit of discovery, who initially invented Garbadine fabric to allow explorers and pioneers to discover the outdoors freely. Although, we wouldn’t want to wear our new Burberry floor-grazing gown through the muddy English countryside – that’s for sure!
The campaign’s immense and never-ending scale reinforces that of nature, whilst the collection itself combines the iconic neutral Burberry colour pallette and tartan with new shapes and silhouettes, imitating nature’s constant evolution. The Burberry gang are paraded around the grand landscape on a mirror-plated lorry (seatbelts not included) and come armoured in everything from tartan leggings and puffa jackets, to bedazzled, beige gowns, the new Olympia bag, and of course new adaptations of the staple Burberry trench. This is a ride we never want to get off.
