Anna Sui: Ready-to-Wear SS21

All this fashion week malarkey can’t half make you feel peckish at times, huh? Lucky us, then, as Anna Sui’s baked us a cherry pie, a nice one as well – topped with a garden of pastry daisies and roses. This is the delicious appetiser to the designer’s delightful video for her SS21 collection, directed by Jeannie Sui Wonders. Amidst the inaugural digital NYFW, this is the first time Sui hasn’t put on a catwalk since 1991, although she’s making up for a loss of tradition with a film that’s both heartwarming and homely.

Enforced time at her own home during the global pandemic had Sui reminiscing about her childhood. “I began thinking about what home means to me – comfort, security, the smells of delectable meals and desserts being made with care, the space to think about what is happening in the world and the people I love,” she explains.

Packed with easy-going, bohemian pieces, this collection is dotted with knitted bags, frilly sandals and floral maxi skirts with matching bucket hats and face masks, too. Speaking of bucket hats, many of the crocheted variations were created using the empty cans of Spindrift sparkling water Sui and her nieces and nephews drank over lockdown.

Like any Anna Sui collection, many of these pieces would make for the perfect attire to dance in a muddy field somewhere from dusk till dawn. Festival chic for a festival-less year. There’s always next year’s Glasto?
