Aural Delights: 10 Podcasts to Brighten Your Lonely Lockdown Days

If you’ve exhausted iPlayer, Netflix, Amazon Prime and Ten’s quarantine TV and film recommendations then this week could look a little daunting. Before you shell out for yet another subscription streaming service we recommend you should try podcasts. Plug your headphones in whilst you’re doing your daily exercise, running to get essentials, doing your ironing or finally getting around to cleaning your windows and enjoy entertainment straight to your ears. Plus they’re all available to listen to for free via your preferred podcast provider. From fashion to football, here are 10 fantastic podcasts to help you pass the time.

Dior Talks – Feminist Art 

Just as it says on the tin, Dior’s podcast explores how feminist art has inspired Maria Grazia Chiuri’s creative direction of the House. Each episode takes the format of a discussion with artists, curators, writers whose narratives have directly influenced her Dior and what feminist art means to them. The series is hosted by the fabulous London-based writer, curator and art historian Katy Hessle of @thegreatwomenartists. First up was Chiuri herself, followed by artist Judy Chicago, curator and critic Paola Ugolini and most recently the inimitable Tracey Emin. Available to listen here. 

The Collectors’ House from Matches Fashion

Since launching in 2018, Matches Fashion’s podcast The Collectors House has features the likes of Simon Rocha, Stephen Jones, Sonic Youth’s Kim Gordon, Neneh Cherry, Roland Mouret, Maureen Paley, Paco Rabanne’s Julien Dossena and 10 Magazine Issue 61 cover star Paloma Elsesser. That’s to name only but a select few. Presented by Danielle Radojcin, guests share the stories behind five objects that have a special significance or provoke inspiration. That Peter Crouch Podcast from BBC Radio 5 Live

In case you weren’t aware fashion and football are a match made in heaven. But you really don’t have to be a football fan to enjoy Peter Crouch’s podcast. Broadcast by Radio 5 Live and best listened to on the BBC Sounds app (download it if you haven’t already for a treasure trove of aural delights including dramatizations of Agatha Christie’s Poirot), the aforementioned footballer is joined by the BBC’s chief sports writer Tom Fordyce and Radio 1’s Chris Stark to discussing “everything you wanted to know about football but never had the chance to ask.” It’s proper laugh out loud funny. Gucci Podcast 

To set our imagination free whilst in lockdown, the latest episode of Gucci’s podcast features the brand’s president and CEO Marco Bizzarri in conversation with three-Michelin-star chef Massimo Bottura. The two old school friends traverse childhood memories and discuss Gucci’s Osteria da Massimo Bottura restaurants that are located in LA and Florence. Once you’ve finished that there are plenty more episodes to keep you entertained including Alessandro Michele in conversation with the likes of Sir Elton John and fashion designer to the hip hop stars Dapper Dan. Table Manners with Jessie Ware

If you’re working on your cooking skills then Jessie Ware’s podcast table manners will really get your culinary juices flowing. Since 2017 the singer has hosted the podcast alongside her mum Lennie directly from her dining table, preparing a meal and having a nice long natter with guests. Ware and her mother have discussed food, family and culture with everyone from Mayor of London Sadiq Khan to Ed Sheeran, even (bravely) cooking for chefs including Jamie Oliver, Yotam Ottolenghi and Nigella Lawson. Over the next few weeks, Carhartt WIP will be sharing some of their favourite shows every Thursday and Sunday. Join three girls from South London with no filter discussing everything, literally no subject matter is out of bounds with this trio. Get an insight into the kind of chat that girls’ toilets in a nightclub might overhear with pure unadulterated and brutally-honest discussions of Audrey, Milena and Tolly T. What started as a challenge on Twitter challenge four years ago has become into one of the funniest podcasts out there. Available to listen here.

Pieces of Me – My Life in Seven Garments from Net-A-Porter

Released only last month, Net-A-Porter’s podcast is hot off the press. Unpacking the meanings and sentiment clothes come to posses, each week an inspiring female guest tells their story through discussions about seven pieces of clothing they wore at life-defining moments. “Pieces of Me reminds us that clothes are never just clothes and that the meanings woven through them – about beauty, power, identity, freedom, and fashion as a force-for-change – are the stories of women’s lives,” explains Sarah Bailey, Porter’s editor-in-chief.
